National currencies of Central America

Currencies in Central America

As a general rule, in all countries of Central America, with the exception of Costa Rica, the US dollar is widely accepted. The only country that does not have its own currency is El Salvador, which is governed by the US dollar. International airports in each Central American country offer windows for currency exchange. Likewise, you can access the currency exchange service at the main banks in each country, and their branches in the main cities.

Therefore, each country has its own currency.

The exchange rate is variable for each of the currencies, and you can calculate it here:

  • Belize – Belizean Dollar
  • Costa Rica – Colón
  • Guatemala – Quetzal
  • Honduras – Lempira
  • Nicaragua – Córdoba
  • Panamá – Balboa
  • El Salvador – US Dollar
