The best museums in Central America

Central America has become a tourist attraction for those tourists or adventurers seeking to find something a little different. If you ask someone what words come to mind when they think of this geographical area, they will most likely think of beaches, nature and enviable cuisine. However, the region is also home to a great many museums for lovers of culture. If you like the sound of more than one of them, you’ll have to opt for a multi-destination trip.

National Museum of Costa Rica

This is perhaps the most important museum in Costa Rica – more specifically, it can be found in San José. Here, you will have the opportunity to learn all about the history of this country from its pre-Columbian origins. What’s more, it also houses Natural History and Archaeology collections.

The museum is in constant transformation, so exhibits are continually changing.

Open Monday to Saturday from 08:30 to 16:30 and Sundays from 09:00 to 16:30. It offers different rates depending on visitors’ age or status (retired, student, foreigner, etc.).

Interactive Museum of Miraflores

This is one of the most impressive places in Guatemala, according to those who have visited it. This is due to the richness of its cultural, archaeological and historical collections.

The museum’s main activity is centred around the exhibition of artefacts from an ancient Mayan city known as Kaminaljuyú, comprised of a total of 500 pieces spread over the museum’s 1,200 square metres. However, its website also offers a series of interactive activities for children, all aiming to introduce them to this important part of the country’s culture, even prior to their visit.

It is open from 09:00 to 19:00, Tuesday to Sunday. It is located in Guatemala City (Zone 11).

The Biomuseo

This is one of the most important natural museums in Central America, located in Panama City.

It focuses on the emergence of the Isthmus of Panama approximately three million years ago. In the galleries, you can also learn how its appearance allowed the continents to be joined and seas to be divided.

This museum has reduced opening hours: Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00. In addition, residents can take advantage of lower rates than non-residents.

Museo del Aire, one of the best museums in Central America

This museum is located in Tegucigalpa. Visiting it feels like taking a trip back in time, as you’ll have the chance to learn all about the history of Honduran aviation. The exhibition has a total of 35 military and civilian aircraft, including the first supersonic aircraft in Central America.

Its prices vary depending on the age of the visitor.
