Lake Yojoa
AN IDEAL PLACE FOR THE PRACTICE OF ACTIVE TOURISM IN NATURE
Lake Yojoa is the only lake that is the product of the explosion of a volcano in Honduras, and is the largest reserve of fresh water in the country. The lake, seen from above, has the shape of a foot sole. The largest cultural development center of the Lenca Culture took place here, and is where the largest collection of objects was rescued from, mostly exhibited in the Museum of Comayagua.
“The Lake” is a point of interest known worldwide among bird lovers. The Yojoa Lake basin is probably the basin with the greatest diversity of birds in all of Honduras. On the shore of the lake there are hotels with their own personality, and on the sides of the road there is a large number of restaurants and eateries where the main dish is the fried fish “lake style,” with sliced banana and pickled vegetables.
An estimated 500 species of birds occur in the basin each year, in an area of less than 1,000 km2. The basin has three main types of forests, plus the marshes and water mirror associated with the largest natural lake in the country. The lake is an ideal place for ecotourism activities, boat rides, and water sports such as jet skiing, regattas, kayaking and fishing.
Within the area of the lake is the Naranjos’ Ecological Park, where a community settled in pre-Hispanic times, which is an important in archeological site. The park houses a museum, and has trails and a suspension bridge, where you can take interpretative tours. Very close to the lake there is the Pulhapanzak Waterfall or white river, originated by an underground drain of the lake, with a curtain of water of approximately 30 meters.
