Cerro Negro Volcano
A cone formed by ash and black sand
The Cerro Negro Volcano is one of the best known attractions for the practice of adventure in Nicaragua, it is located 25 km from the city of Leon, it is the youngest in Central America (167 years) and one of the most active in the country, It measures approximately 728 meters above sea level. It is a cone formed by ash and black sand, hence its name, its eruptions generally are expulsions of pyroclastic fragments, ashes and lava, its last eruption was in 1999. Its young age and constant activity make it impossible for trees to grow and plants on their drooping black skirts. Some parts of this volcano are covered by huge rocks and others by fine sand.
Climbing it through the practice of sandboarding is an unforgettable and unique experience, an adventure. The Pilas – El Hoyo Community Tourism Cooperative is located on the site and provides the following services: *Tourist guide. *Sandboarding. *Canopy. *Observatory of iguana and snake farms.
