Pearl Lagoon
The largest coastal lagoon in Nicaragua
Laguna de Perlas, is the largest coastal lagoon in Nicaragua, it is located 49 km north of the city of Bluefields and 360 km from the city of Managua. It has a territorial extension of 3,876 km². The Cayos Perla wildlife refuge (17 small islands), located approximately 16 nautical miles northeast of the municipal seat, represent the municipality’s greatest natural attraction, along with the Awas spa located in the community of the same name. In addition to its natural attractions, it also has a great historical and cultural wealth represented by ethnic groups such as the Miskitu, Garífuna, Creole and mestizo.
The most representative communities are: Orinoco, Kahkabila, Haulover, Awas, Raitipura, Tasbapounie, San Vicente and Set Net Point.
In addition, in Laguna de Perlas you can enjoy cuisine based on the sea, such as rondón (turtle fin, smoked pork fish), hash fish (shredded fish), stew hagle with dumpling (clam stew with meatball) and fish tea (fish tea). It is also recommended to drink coconut milk, ginger beer or fresh rice among other drinks in the area.
