A Mayan legend narrates that on the slope of the Chicabal volcano there was a sacred lagoon where the locals bathed and washed their clothes, a situation that annoyed the mountain and caused it to dry up due to their lack of respect. Repentant, they made Mayan ceremonies to ask for the drought to end and after a while a loud thunder was heard and the next morning, the natives discovered that in the middle of the crater of the volcano there was a lagoon which they called Chicabal.
This lagoon is a cosmic meeting point for the Mayas of the Man and Quiché ethnic groups, where Mayan rituals and ceremonies are held, so it is considered a sacred place.
