Barú Volcano National Park
THE HIGHEST POINT OF PANAMA
With an area of 14,325 hectares, the Barú Volcano National Park is located in the Province of Chiriquí, in the north of the country. The park is a scenic complex of high ecological and geological value that protects a biological diversity with unique species in this area. We find scenarios ranging from tropical rainforest landscapes with high-altitude species, to products of the last eruption of the Barú Volcano millions of years ago. This combination of forests and volcano is nuanced with the agricultural activities typical of the highlands, with a pleasant climate of up to 140C, and typical foods that make it one of the most visited sites in Panamá.
To visit the Barú Volcano National Park from Panamá City, it takes an hour by air, or six hours by car to the City of David, from where you travel 40 kilometers in approximately 25 minutes.
The Park (at 3,475 meters above sea level, the highest point in the country), offers multiple ways to enjoy nature on trails such as La Nevera, El Quetzal (Cerro Punta-Boquete), where you can explore the exuberance of the humid forest tropical with giant tree species. The climb to Barú Volcano is an opportunity to experience a scenario that evokes the origins of the American Continent, in a journey of four hours on foot, or 30 minutes in a 4×4 car (all terrain) on a rough road. Once at the top, on a clear day you can see the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. You can also hike the trails that access the different craters of the Barú Volcano, where you will have the opportunity to observe unique bird species. Rafting or canoeing is practiced in rivers such as Chiriquí Viejo, which crosses the agricultural landscape of Boquete. Places like Paso del Respingo are perfect for bird watching, especially the Quetzal (phraromachrus mocino) and the toucan (Swainsonii ramphastos), or to find beautiful orchids, ferns and mosses. After a day of tours and coexistence with nature you can have an aromatic coffee in Boquete.
