Located between the departments of Guatemala and Escuintla, it has an altitude of 2,552 meters above sea level and it is believed that there must have been a strong explosive activity that originated five large craters, the largest is the municipality of San Vicente Pacaya. The cones are known as “cheese leaf”, which is on the edge of the lagoon Calderas, Cerro Negro, Cerro Chiquito, Cerro Chino and the fifth active cone is recognized as Pacaya volcano.

The scenic and natural beauty of this park is worth appreciating, where majestic volcanoes emerge as guardians, creating a unique mosaic that is hardly appreciated anywhere else in the world. This is one of 4 active volcanoes in the country and those who make the ascent of this majestic volcano, can appreciate a pleasant, cool and amazing climate. Tourists must be accompanied by local tourist guides who will tell them historical and curious facts about this imposing volcano.

It is important to point out that the active crater of the Pacaya massif is named after the Guatemalan doctor Alfredo MacKenney, who has made more than 1,200 ascents since 1965 and for the follow-up he has given to the evolution of this volcano.
