Geologically speaking, the Isthmus of Panama was formed only a short time ago, but its appearance literally changed the world. While a great ocean split in two, changing ocean currents and climate, two great continental masses joined together, bringing about an unprecedented exchange of flora and fauna. To learn more about Panama’s unique impact on the world’s biodiversity, as well as the country’s commitment to environmental protection, be sure to visit the Biomuseo. The striking and colorful building was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the mastermind behind some iconic structures around the world, such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris. The Biomuseo is Gehry’s first design in Latin America.

Inside the space are 8 galleries: Biodiversity Showcase; Panamarama, a 3-level projection of Panama’s ecosystems; The Bridge Arises, which explains how Panama was formed; The Great Exchange, an exhibit on the animals that migrated through the region; The Human Footprint, where you can learn about the human history of the area; Divided Oceans, an aquarium; The Living Web, a 15-meter sculpture; and finally Panama is the Museum, an interactive version of the relationship between Panama’s cultural and ecological diversity.
