The small town of Perquín is located north of the department of Morazán, 205 kilometers from San Salvador, and was widely known outside the Salvadoran borders as a region controlled by opposition forces during the armed conflict that ended in the year 1992.

Many of the inhabitants of Perquín and its surrounding regions chose to emigrate due to the war situation that existed at that time. Others opted to join the opposition forces, and took refuge in the mountains. Then, with the end of the conflict, some of the residents returned to their old homes and have populated the cities once abandoned.

Little by little, Perquín has been visited by both domestic and foreign tourists. Sites such as the well-known Río Sapo and its protected area, the Negro River, and hills such as El Gigante and El Pericón offer tourists its natural and historical wealth.

In Perquín there are two mountain hotels that are recommended for their standards of quality and cleanliness: Hotel Perkín Lenca, and El Ocotal, which also offer restaurant facilities. Other more basic and economic options for lodging are the Hospedaje Gigante, and the Hostal de Mama Toya. If the tourist wishes to camp, he can do it in places like the Ecoalberge Río Sapo. For a walk or visit to any place of tourist interest, it is recommended to contact PRODETUR, which has tourist guides, who are expert experts in the area and its attractions. Although Perquín has low levels of insecurity and crime, it is recommended to take the tours in the company of guides.

From Perquín, tourists can travel to other places such as: Cacaopera, Corinto, El Mozote, etc. It is worth visiting the city in the first week of August, during which the “Winter Festival” is celebrated every year. The Festival is an artistic-cultural event, and is celebrated in commemoration of the end of the armed conflict, and the beginning of a time of peace and tranquility.
