The fortress of this beautiful city, ironically, never fulfilled the purpose for which it was constructed, because, even though it was the most important port on the Atlantic coast of Central America during the colonial era, and had been attacked, of course, numerous times by pirates seeking to seize the goods that were shipped to Spain from the colonies, when its construction was finally finished it was too late ...

And is that piracy became a thing of the past, and this fortress passed to local hands, being used as a prison.

Today,  , the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History has rescued this beautiful legacy.

Omoa offers not only its colonial history, but also its natural beauty, as you can find white sand beaches on a calm sea, inviting you to relax, feel the breeze, and for those wanting more adventure, they can practice water sports.
