Ceibal is recognized as a main ceremonial center and is referred to as "The Gallery of Mayan Art" for having numerous well-preserved stelae of all Mayan sites in Petén.
Description and main attractions
Entering into deep vegetation and listening the life in nature, as if it were a melody, makes the visitor feel in harmony with himself and the environment, discovering the secrets of the mysterious civilization. This city has more than 600 structures, of which there are 4 squares with 31 sculptured monuments, 56 stelae, 22 altars and 2 ball game fields.
The structures that are restored are the Central Plaza and an astronomical observatory, although undoubtedly the most striking of this archaeological site are its magnificent stelae.
Also, the site consists of a ceremonial center where you will find a pyramid that contains three levels of terraces and a stairway, presiding the image of an altar with the form of a resting jaguar decorated with figures of out of this world called "Aluxes" located at the top of the square that marks the end of the path of a Mayan city.
Location
Located in the southwest area of Peten, about 20kms east of Sayaxché.
Getting There:
By car: From the City Guatemala take the road of the Atlantic (CA9), to Coban. In the main street of Coban, almost opposite the Plaza Magdalena shopping center, take to the left at the detour that takes you straight to Chisec (74 km) and then headed north to Sayaxché.
In Sayaxché take a boat on La Pasion River, enjoying a ride where you can observe the fauna and flora of the forest.
