Aguateca is part of the Petexbatún group together with Dos Pilas, Tamarindito and Arroyo de Piedra and like the other archaeological sites of the group, is close to the river from where they obtained supplies and defended themselves from possible attacks. In fact, it still retains the natural fissure used by the Maya to defend the city and royal palaces.
Description and main attractions
The city was abandoned quickly, and never repopulated, which offered archaeologists the rare opportunity to finding many ceremonial objects and of everyday use in excellent condition, responding to some existing puzzles. The site has eight estelaes, three squares, two palaces and many temples and nowadays has a small museum.

Located in the southwest area of Peten, on the southern tip of Lake Petexbatún.
Getting There:
By car: From the City of Guatemala take the road of the Atlantic (CA9), to Coban.In the main street of Coban, almost opposite the Plaza Magdalena shopping center, take to the left at the detour that takes you straight to Chisec (74 km) and then headed north to Sayaxché.
In Sayaxché take a boat that goes straight to Aguateca pier, a half-hour ride where you can enjoy the lovely sounds and sightings of the jungle
