This archaeological site also known as "Cerro Maya" is located along a beautiful stretch of turquoise water. Cerros was an important commercial center during the last stage of the Maya civilization Preclassic period. Among its three enormous acropolis stands out a temple of more than 20 mts. in height.
Description and main attraction:
It had its peak time in the year 400 BC when it served as an important center of commerce, trading with salt, honey, jade and obsidian.
Although it has not been entirely rebuilt, the ruins of Cerros are very attractive. The site consists of three Acropolis, which stands over several squares with pyramidal structures on the sides. The tallest structure (structure 4) is a 22 mts temple, which offers a spectacular view of Chetumal Bay.
Four masks on the walls of the pyramid containing Mayas hieroglyphics stand out: yax (first), k'in (sun) and two masks that represent the morning appearance of Venus, and glyphs representing the morning star and evening star, so it can be interpreted with these pieces of Maya art, that since ancient times the peoples of the region had a special interest in astronomical observation.
Location
