Caracol-Belice

País Belice

Description and main attractions:

According to interpretations of stelaes found at the site, Caracol had an important role in the history of the Mayan cities. It appears initially that Caracol had a good relationship with Tikal, but years later it had deteriorated. It was suspected that it was due to the execution of an elite character from Caracol. This gave place to a confrontation in the year 562, which is marked in the stelae, and hence in history, as the defeat of Tikal, diminishing its power.

The site of Caracol is composed of five squares, numerous structures and an astronomical observatory.  The largest temple in the whole country named "Caana" (Place in Heaven) with about 46 meters high and two ball game fields stands out clearly.
