As if it were a watercolour, beautiful scenery of lush vegetation appears caressed by the warm waters of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, its lakes and waterfalls splash the environment bringing about a tranquillity sensation that it contrasts with the fierceness of its rivers and the internal force of volcanoes.
Sitting on the Caribbean plate and with an extension of 523,000 square kilometres, Central America is located in the western hemisphere stretching from the Isthmus of Tehuatepec situated south of Mexico to the Valley of River Trato located in Colombia, resulting in a natural barrier that separates two oceans.
Nature:
Central America seems to have been designed for outdoor and nature enthusiasts; it is striking that with only 1% of the Earth's land surface, the Central American isthmus contains 8% of nature reserves existing on the planet, in which 22 areas of life and 17 eco-regions have been identified, which are home to more than 20,000 different plant species. To preserve this beautiful natural heritage, Central America currently has 144 protected areas and 124 natural parks.
Mountainous and volcanic system:
The Central American isthmus is largely a region that extends at an oblique angle for more than 2,000 miles, in which the highlands and mountainous area with volcanic chains rise abruptly to the summits from the narrow coastal region of the Pacific Ocean, and gradually descend into a vast region located along the Atlantic. A total of 109 volcanoes, of which a large number are located on the Pacific coast, are still active. Volcanic activity has created a landscape with soothing natural hot springs, majestic cones raised by eruptions of lava and beautiful lakes formed in extinct volcanic craters.
Oceans:
In Central America, both oceans lead the pace of life. The Caribbean Basin, with its broad white sand beaches and warm turquoise waters, is located in the Atlantic Ocean with a length of 2.740 km bathing the countries of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, being a common practice water sports like diving, snorkelling, whale watching and turtle nesting.
The volcanic sand and warm waters of the Pacific coast has a length of 2,830 kilometres being ideal at a world level for surfing, windsurfing and fishing. The Pacific coast covers the countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.
Numerous islands in both the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific are regarded as true paradise where the idea of Eden becomes reality.
